Meet the Candidate:
My name is Debra Fowlkes and I am running for a seat on the Westland City Council. I’ve lived in Westland for over 35 years. I was born and raised in Madisonville, a small town in Southwestern Kentucky. I was married to my husband, Robert Fowlkes for 40 years. We had two children, L’Oreal Walker and Darren Fowlkes. Both of which graduated from John Glenn High School. I have two wonderful grandchildren, Chloe and Robert Walker (pictured above).
I hold a Bachelors of English Literature/Language from Eastern Michigan University and a Master’s degree in Health Services Administration from the University of Detroit Mercy and I have been employed with Henry Ford Health Systems as an Insurance Contract Administrator for 10 years. I have over 30 years of experience in Healthcare Administration, it is my passion.
- Appointed to Wayne-Westland School Board in 1993. Served as School Board President for the 1997-1998 school year. As School Board President, lead the charge to pass a 108.8 million dollar bond issue for classroom technology and building upgrades. Sought to instill a positive relationship between the school district and the community and was instrumental in achieving unity and harmony among the bored members which was severely lacking for several years.
- Served as a mentor for the city’s Youth Assistance Program where I mentored Westland teenagers would had gotten into trouble at home or in school and in some instances had instances with the police. Upon completion, these children had their records wiped clean.
- Seated on the Police and Fire Commission for 8 years. I am well aware of the value of our first responders.
- Seated on the Planning Commission for the last 5 years reviewed zoning amendments, applications for special land uses,site plan approvals, and planned unit developments
